Ethiopia: January - February

Ethiopia: 16 January to 1 February

Titch has led three very successful tours to the fascinating and ancient land of Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia, one of only two countries in Africa never to have been colonised.  Michael Johnson will lead this tour which will be special, in that on the 3rd day we will be privileged to witness the 2-day religious  festival of Timket .

The tour will commence in Ethiopia’s capital city of Addis Ababa, from where we will fly to Bahar Dar (lake Tana) and the Blue Nile, one of the sources of the Nile. before visiting Lalibela, famous for its rock churches.  We will then head on to Gondar and spend a day in the Simien Mountains where we can see the Galada baboons, before flying to Axum and then Gheralta to visit another rock church, Mariam Korkor.

We move on to Dalol, by one of two methods: transport or camels/hiking, ending up in Ertaale (one of only 5 lava lakes in the world), and onto Mekele. We fly from Mekele back to Addis Ababa from where we will visit historic, fascinating, walled and picturesque market town of Harar, the 4th most important holy site in Islam. Thereafter we make for the Awash National Park, a paradise for bird lovers.

We round off by returning to Addis, taking a “peep” at the 3-million year old homonid, Lucy, which explains in part the “Origin of Man”, and home again.
