This will be the fifth tour to the fascinating and ancient land of Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia, one of only two countries in Africa never to have been colonised. Ralph Roseman will lead this tour. Click here for his CV.
The tour will commence in Ethiopia’s capital city of Addis Ababa, from where we will fly to Bahar Dar (Lake Tana) and the Blue Nile, one of the sources of the Nile. before we head on to Gondar. Thereafter we will spend a day in the Simien Mountains where we hope to see the intriguing Galada baboons. We will then visit Lalibela, famous for its rock churches, before flying to Axum and then Gheralta, to visit yet another rock church, Mariam Korkor.
We will then experience the Danakil Depression with its mineral deposits and hot springs, as well as the Erta Ale (one of only 5 lava lakes in the world), before moving onto Mekele. We fly from Mekele back to Addis Ababa, from here we will visit the historic, fascinating, walled and picturesque market town of Harar,. The latter is the 4th most important holy site in Islam, and we will travel to the Awash National Park, a paradise for bird lovers, before returning to Addis. Once back in the capital city, we will enjoy a brief city tour, including a visit to “meet” Lucy, the 3-million year old hominid, before being transferred to the airport for our evening flight home.
